Mrs. Barrows was a special advisor to the firm on increasing efficiency. It appears, but is not absolutely clear, that she advised the owner to fire these people for that reason. Mr. Martin suffered silently with this annoying woman, but when he felt that his own department and perhaps he himself, might be next on her list, he decided to strike first and rid himself of this threat to his position. Upon analysis, we see this is merely a plot device to supply a more adequate basis for the murder of Mrs. Barrows than simply her annoying, irritating, overbearing and upsetting attitude in the office. Most readers, probably male, would have had no difficulty if Mr. Martin had carried out his plan way before Mrs. Barrows began tearing up the pea patch in the office. In fact, some would have had her gone even before she could say "Boo."
Mrs. Barrows fired the people in the story because she wanted to bring in new employees who would follow her strict rules and guidelines for office efficiency. She believed that the current employees were not living up to her standards and wanted to make changes to improve the department's performance.
In "The Catbird Seat," isolation and invisibility are demonstrated through the character of Mr. Martin, who appears unassuming and overlooked by his coworkers. However, he uses this perception to his advantage to plan and execute his revenge on Mrs. Barrows, who represents disruption and chaos in the orderly setting of the F&S department. Mr. Martin's meticulous planning and hidden intentions reveal how invisibility can be a powerful tool when used strategically.
