According to common myth - he was killed by an arrow to the eye - sent by a Norman archer. This may be verified by the Bayeux tapestry which clearly shows a man, similar to how Harold looked in previous parts of the tapestry, with an arrow in his eye. Contemporary accounts of the battle do not mention an arrow, but suggest that after Harolds bodyguards (the housecarls) were finally picked off by the Norman archers, Harold was left unprotected. He was quickly set upon by Norman knights who promptly hacked him to death. To make sure he was dead, the body was supposedly chopped into many small pieces. Not a nice way to go!
the reason why people became knights was to: 1. protect the king and help other in need 2. win battles for the king and make your kingdom stronger 3. to kind of guide people not to go out of control

Knights were peasants' overlords. Peasants owed them service (they would farm and work for them) in return for their land. Peasants were effected by what kind of overlord the Knight was, whether he was fighting, meaning he was away, or saving up to go on crusade, meaning he might need more money.

Diarmait Mac Murchada, anglicized as Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster, was defeated and exiled by a group of enemies. He fled to Normandy and appealed to the King Henry II of England for help in getting his kingdom back. Henry gave the aid, and Leinster was retaken in short order. The problem with all this was that Norman knights had gone into Ireland to help the King of Leinster, and Henry was worried that they would eventually set up their own independent Norman kingdom in Ireland. So he went to Ireland to get some control over the situation. The kings of a number of Irish kingdoms acknowledged Henry as an overlord as a way to curb the power of Leinster, and the Norman knights he brought along set up residence in Ireland as well.
