Washington did not give his wives silverware to the government. Many of the pieces still exist today at Mt. Vernon or at the Smithsonian. Martha Washington held many dinners and a weekly open house as the first lady so she would have used her silverware. Since she outlived him by several years what she had would also have been given to her children at her death.
