Quakers came to America to pursue religious freedom and economic opportunity. George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers, encouraged a leading follower and friend, William Penn, to secure a grant of land in America from the King of England. The land grant was named Pennsylvania (Penn's Woods) where they could build a city of brotherly love known as Philadelphia. William Penn was also one of the early Proprietors of the colony of New Jersey. George Fox visited Philadelphia as the guest of William Penn. William Penn granted a Charter of Privileges to the people of Pennsylvania in 1701 which included religious freedom and tolerance. Following the 50th anniversary of the Charter (1752), the Liberty Bell was cast with the inscription from the Bible (Leviticus) "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." Liberty was the principle reason for Quakers to settle in the New World.
