Francis Drake was well known for his skill as a pirate, and Elizabeth I privately hired him on trips under Sir John Hawkins to raid Spanish ships in the New World. Eventually she sponsored his own voyages, which were so successful it brought England out of foreign debt. On his voyages a significant amount of map making was done in the California area, as well as along the coast of South America. Sir Francis Drake was the first Englishman to travel entirely around the world by sea, but no evidence shows that Elizabeth and Drake actually planned that in advance. Some say Drake decided that was a better way to get back, since they had difficulty going around the tip of South America on their trip.
Francis Drake was a successful privateer (sea pirate) chosen by Queen Elizabeth 1 to voyage the world and enable the English to become major players in the race for colonisation and trade, defeating the Spanish Armada along the way.
It is often thought that she did, but she didn't; unless you count her sending him to imprisonment in the Tower of London. All Drake's expeditions were funded by himself and some rich friends, and he alone - or together with those friends - decided where he wanted to go to. Returning from his voyages he did come to Court hoping for 'advancement', and to present her with exotic gifts and tall tales about his travels. Because she did like and admire him for a while, she rewarded him with offices and titles that carried handsome renumerations.
Queen Elizabeth Sponsored Sir Francis Drake because if he found new land then she would rule it and gain more power.
his task was to open trade routes and explore the west coasts of North and South America.

She was comfortably sequestered from court, and very closely watched by spies representing Queen Mary, her reigning Catholic half-sister. Queen Mary died before evidence could be gathered to send the suspected-Protestant Elizabeth to the headsman.
Anthony Babington wrote coded messages to Mary Queen of Scots. He gave the message to Gilbert Gifford who then hid it in a beer barrel's cork. Mary then found these and wrote back the same way but the opposite way. she would put the message into the cork and then Gifford will find it and then give it to Babington. Gifford also copied the messages and sent them to Thomas Phillips who would then decode the messages and send them to Queen Elizabeth.:) there you go
