Richard Fiedler was a German scientist at the time and came with a break through by having a one man flamethrower called the flammerwerfer, which has a 4 meter back pack of one side oil and the other pressurized gas. He used a simple ignition at the end of a steel nozel lighting oil on fire as you spew out oil

But the first modern day flamethrower was invented in Germany in 1901 by Richard Fiedler. It was first or used in battle in World War I by the Germans on the French, some time between October of 1914 and February of 1916 (at Verdun).
