Cardinal Richelieu of France was a proficient statesman and diplomat who aimed to increase French power and influence on the European stage. He often used alliances and military interventions to achieve this goal, including supporting Protestant powers in the Thirty Years' War when it suited France's interests. Richelieu's foreign policy was characterized by a realpolitik approach of advancing France's position through strategic alliances and interventions.
Cardinal Richelieu was a master in coordinating France's domestic and foreign affairs during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). His chief goal was to prevent France from being encircled by the Habsburg dynasty, which controlled lands in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, and numerous other European possessions. As a result, Cardinal Richelieu actually supported the Protestant Swedes and German statelets against the Catholic Habsburgs, betraying his religious allegiance (he was a Catholic Cardinal), in order to preserve French independence. It was because of Richelieu's expert statesmanship that France would become the dominant power in Europe in the next century after the Peace of Westphalia, especially during the reign of Louis XIV.
The Hundred Years War involved England and France, not the U.S. The U.S. was not even a country when the Hundred Years War was fought.

Cardinal Richelieu, the standing leader of France, realized that if he backed the Protestants (Sweden, Netherlands, England, protestant Germans) in their war against the Catholics (Hapsburg Germans, Pope and Holy Roman Empire, Spain) and the protestants won, France would be the most powerful nation in Europe. This was the first time after the Protestant Reformation that a war was fought for something other than religious ideals. Because of this Spain ceased to be the most powerful nation, and France took its place.

In 1624 when Pascal was just one year old, Cardinal Richelieu was appointed Chief Minister by the king of France. In that position, he directed France's domestic policy as well as foreign policy which was largely dominated by the Thirty Years War. In 1651, Charles I was executed publicly after his army was defeated by the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. On the year of Pascal's death 1663, France consolidated her possessions in the North America collectively called 'The New France' only to lose it a year later to the English.
The Schlieffen Plan, named after Alfred von Schlieffen, the general who created it. Understanding that a war (World War I) would probably happen soon and that it would involve Germany fighting against France and Russia at the same time, it was designed to attack France and defeat her quickly. The Russian army was very large but slow to mobilize, so it gave Germany time to fight France first.
