In latin, cell means compartment or little room.

Robert Hooke discovered cells in cork (the bark of a particular tree). He observed small honeycomb-like structures. They reminded him of rooms. That is why he called them cells.

Robert Hooke named them cells because they looked like semenary rooms in churches. As a similar answer in this site - "Why did Robert Hooe use the word cell?" - answers, scientist usually used words from the Latin lauguage. A small room has the Latin word, cella. Also, when Robert Hooke discovered cells, he was not a criminal and he also did not get tours of jail. He did not know what jail cells looked like. Though, he did know what semenary rooms for priests looked like, as he was very religious.

Robert Hooke's drawings show the details of a thinly sliced piece of cork. He named them cells, because they reminded him of the bare wall rooms where monks lived, called cells.
