Senator Ted Kennedy challenged President Carter for the Democratic nomination in the 1980 primaries. Despite a spirited campaign, Kennedy ultimately lost to Carter, who went on to be the Democratic candidate in the general election, where he lost to Republican candidate Ronald Reagan.
Eugene McCarthy, Senator from Minnesota was the first to challenge Johnson for the nomination and he was anti-war. His success encouraged Bobby Kennedy to enter the race against Johnson's war policies. (The Democrats failed to take the hint and nominated Johnson's VP Humphrey who lost.)

Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy, born November 20, 1925, was the younger brother of John Kennedy. He was appointed by his brother as the Attorney Genera in 1961. After his brother's death, he left the Johnson Cabinet and was elected as a Senator from New York in 1964. In 1968, he became an out-spoken critic of the Vietnam War and made such a formidable challenge to Johnson for the 1968 nomination that Johnson decided not to run.
