The capture of Harper's Ferry with its arsenal was something the Confederates began while still moving north, about five days before the battle. There were 12,000 Yankees in Harper's Ferry and Lee did not want to go past them and leave them behind him, in case they came out and attacked him army while it was going north. It took several days for Jackson's men to get on the three heights overlooking the town and emplace cannon there - one across the Potomac on the Maryland side, and one on either side of the Shenandoah. Once there they had to bombard the Yankees some to convince them to surrender, which they only did after the Rebels began an attack. Meanwhile a copy of Lee's orders had been found by the Yankees, who moved with unusual haste for them, to bring on a battle. Lee was not expecting to fight quite that soon. Jackson left only one division at Harper's Ferry, to finish paroling prisoners and start captured was munitions south. That division marched very rapidly tot he battle and arrived just in the nick of time to save the Confederates from disaster, as the day of the battle was ending.
The plan for the attack on the Confederate incursion into Maryland was to follow the Rebel army. Then, assault it in order to drive it out of the North. Finding the lost General Lee order that split the Confederate army proved to not change much as Union General McClellan was slow to act. In fact he failed to save harper's Ferry from capture by Stonewall Jackson.
Confederate General Stonewall Jackson remained a constant threat to Union operations in Virginia until his death after the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. Prior to that, Jackson had been causing grief to Union generals assigned by President Lincoln to capture or destroy Jackson's army. His victory at the Battle of Winchester on May 25, caused Lincoln's plans to reinforce General McClellan's Peninsula campaign to pause. As long as Jackson remained a dominate force in the Shenandoah Valley, helping McClellan would be impossible.
Students of the US Civil War cannot have a complete view of it without noticing the efforts of the federal Xll Corps in the early part of the war. As the battle of Antietam was unfolding, the Corps would bring into the battle a string of misfortunes. It had been led by a number of commanders one of which, was Major General Joseph Mansfield who lost his life at Antietam.Prior to this major civil war battle, the Corps was always in the thick of the action. When it was commanded by General Banks, it had been defeated by Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley in the Spring of 1862. No disgrace as most of the Union commanders facing Stonewall Jackson met similar fates. The Corps remained intact and again had been defeated at Cedar Mountain in early August of 1862 and shared the fate of General John Pope's in the Battle of the Second Bull Run.The Xll Corps would, however, despite heavy losses, capture the Dunker Church at the Battle of Antietam. Without the courage of the men in this Corps, General McClellan would have had a less successful outcome there.
Andrew Jackson performed successfully in the southern theater during the War of 1812. American efforts to capture Montreal met with failure due to poor organization and implementation and hostilities between commanding officers. A win would have made Britain's hold on America tenuous, at best. However, the United States was unable to successfully capture Montreal.
John Brown's group raided Harper's Ferry Arsenal. Lee led a contingent of Marines to capture them. Brown was tried and hanged for treason.

Battle of Antietam
As the Confederate raid into Maryland was unfolding in 1862, General Robert E. Lee assigned Stonewall Jackson the mission of capturing Harper's Ferry. Lee might have known that Jackson's first assignment in the US Civil War was, as a colonel, assigned to take charge of troops in and around Harper's Ferry. This was near an important railway junction, and was the site of a former US arsenal.Jackson was very familiar with the area around this former arsenal.

Confederate General Robert Ransom Jr. graduated from West Point in 1850. He was ranked eighteenth among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 44. Ransom fought to capture Harper's Ferry in 1862, which allowed General Lee to fight at the Battle of Antietam. Ransom rode with Stonewall Jackson's troops to Antietam and served at that battle as well. Later he would fight at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was wounded and illness kept him out of the remainder of the war.
