They did not, it happened the other war round, Rome started out as a republic ruled by the senate, then after Julius Caesar (who refused to be king/emperor when this was offered to him), Rome became a monarchy ruled by an emperor.

Because they were "uncomfortable" with monarchy. That is my opinion, though. Hope that helps :)

Actually Rome had just less than seven kings when it was born, then it became a republic until its end. They had consoles, senators and democracy but it was an empire. Rome wasnt governed by a king or emperor per se, but by senators although the emperor had more powers than nowaddays presidents.

There are no historical records why they did this because Rome was sacked in 390 and much of the early history of Rome was lost.

According to legend the last king of Rome "Lucius Tarquinius Superbus" was a tyrant and caused much blood shed and violence. During his rule his son then raped a roman women. He demanded she have sex with him and said if she refused he would make it look like a slave had slept with her thus ruining her reputation. The women then told what happened then killed herself from shame and this is what sparked the revolt that caused the Romans to overthrow the kind. They hated the king so much they vowed that one man should never rule.

The above is a nice story but it is just that a story or a legend that probably is not true. The last two kings of rome had Etruscan names The Etruscans was another civilization that lived to the north of rome. Some historians think that the Etrucans conquered Rome at some point and rome was under the rule of Etruscan kings. The Romans then revolted and drove away the Etruscan kings. They may have been influenced by the Greeks or they may simply could not decide on one king so they set up a republic as their form of government.

How did the Romans finally change their governemnt after 200 years of harsh monarchic rule?

The Roman monachy was not a hostory of 244 years of harsh rule. Only its last king was a tyrant. The Romans overthrew the last Roman king in a rebellion in 509 BC because he was a tyrant. They decided to do away with the monarchy and establish a republic to prevent the return of tyranny. Monarchy became associated with tyranny. They created the Roman Republic, which was headed by two annually elected consuls. Having two men in charge meant that they could counterbalance each other. The short term of office ensured that no one could concentrate power in his hands and thus become a tyrant. The Romans also swore that they would not let anyone try to become a king. Trying to become a king was the worst possible accusation .In the 5th century BC one man was killed and his house destroyed and in the 4th century BC another man was executed because of accusations of trying to become a king.
