We can not be sure what Emperor Constantine's main reason for accepting Christianity really was, but historians are aware of some issues:

Constantine clearly thought that Christianity would help bring unity to the Roman Empire, and expressed concern when he realised how disunited Christianity really was.

Constantine's patron god had been the sun god Apollo. Constantine seems to have little understanding of Christianity, and some scholars believe that Constantine thought of Jesus Christ as another sun god. If so, he would have found it very easy to think of himself as a Christian.

We do know that Constantine was one of the most murderous Roman emperors, apparently lacking in any moral standards, so we can say that he was unlikely to have been attracted by the moral principles that Christians taught.

As is so often the case, it came down to what the sovereign wanted. When Emperor Constantine chose Christianity, he gave the new religion considerable state patronage and began the long persecution of the pagan religion. The dynastic succession of his sons ensured that Rome would remain under Christian rule, apart from the brief rule of Julian the Apostate. When Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 CE, Christians were still in the minority, but the writing was on the wall. When Theodosius banned the public worship of the pagan gods in 391, it was not much longer before he had increased the intensity of the persecution of pagans so that only the most faithful or the most geographically remote pagans could resist the attraction of Christianity.

A:Rome eventually adopted Christianity because the emperors adopted Christianity. The first Christian emperor, Constantine, gave Christianity state patronage, began the long persecution of the pagan temples and made it clear to men of ambition that career prospects would improve by adopting Christianity. His sons and successors continued Constantine's policies and increased the persecution of the pagan temples. By 381, Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the state religion of empire and allowed the Christians, led by their bishops, to plunder the temples for the treasures. In 391 CE, it became a criminal offence, punishable by death, to worship the old gods publicly.
