Romeo and Juliet's love was forbidden as they were from rival families and they married in secret. Romeo was then banished for killing Juliet's cousin and Juliet's father decided to marry his daughter. To avoid marrying another man Juliet hatched a plan with Friar Lawrence that meant she took a potion which made her appear to be dead. The Friar was supposed to send a message to Romeo telling him to come get Juliet and take her away. However, he failed to recieve the message and believed she was truly dead. He decided he didn't want to live without her and drank poison, dying moments before Juliet wakes up. When Juliet saw that Romeo was dead, she also decided she didn't want to live without him and stabbed herself with a dagger.

Romeo and Juliet killed themselves because miscommunication and a series of unfortunate events led them to believe that the other was dead. The tragic misunderstanding ultimately drove them to seek a joint death rather than face life without each other.
