St. Joseph accepted the responsibility of raising Jesus and supporting and caring for his wife, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Before they were married, Joseph learned that Mary was with child and he knew it could not be his. He could have walked away at that time and had nothing to do with Mary. However, in a dream it was revealed to him that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit and had no relations with another man. From that day he took Mary as his wife and did everything to assure he was a good father to Jesus.

Joseph was proclaimed a saint by popular acclamation long before the official process for canonization was instituted. This probably occurred in the earliest days of the Church.
