St. Barbara, if she really existed, would have been declared a saint shortly after her martyrdom. However, there is virtually no evidence that she really existed and her name was removed from the Calendar of Saints and her cult suppressed in 1969.

Saint Sexburga became canonized due to her piety, devotion to God, and the miracles attributed to her. She was known for her charitable works, establishing monasteries, and dedication to spreading the Christian faith. Her devout life inspired others, leading to her eventual recognition as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Sexburga was not canonized as the procedures for canonization were not instituted until many years after her death. She was declared a saint by the early Christians and named a saint by a local bishop. Now all canonizations must be approved by the pope. Her elevation to sainthood was based on her holy and devout life as well as the fact that when her tomb was opened many years after her death her body was found to be incorrupt.
