Socrates was planned to be rescued by his students from prison but Socrates did not give his consent. He had passed the peak of his career, sown the seeds in fertile soil and done his work. He was already old and possibly can not do anything more except being a pleasure for the sentimental young Plato to see. Even if rescued from prison by his very able students and followers he would not live many more years. He calculated that becoming a martyr for his ideals would be highly promotional and profitable for the immediate spreading of his ideals. That was why that cunning old man drank hemlock willingly. However after drinking the abominable potion, he conducted his last class on this world in that prison. It was about how poison affects each organ in the human body.
