He was already old and possibly can not do anything more except being a pleasure for the sentimental young Plato to see. Even if rescued from prison by his very able students and followers he would not live many more years. He calculated that becoming a martyr for his ideals would be highly promotional and profitable for the immediate spreading of his ideals. That was why that cunning old man drank hemlock willingly.
