The priests were with the explorers for two reasons. One reason was to see to the souls of the men on ship. Crews said about 56 prayers a day and had mass twice a day. The second was to save the souls of the natives they met. The guiding thought of the time was that since the Natives they met were not Christians that their souls were in danger. At first, they weren't sure they were human and it took a Papal ruling to find that they were, so they were out to convert as many people as they could. They forced people to convert and killed many in trying. Finally, they enslaved them.
