During the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero, the city of Rome was destroyed by a disastrous fire. Some said that Nero, himself, ordered the fire so he could rebuild the city based on his own vision of the future. Others say it was an accident. About the same time Christianity was really beginning to make inroads in Rome. Nero considered the Christians as trouble makers who were trying to undermine Roman authority by converting people away from paganism and the Roman gods. Nero decided to place the blame for the fire on the early Christian's and began to vigorously persecute them. He was especially interested in destroying the leadership of the new church, hoping that, by doing so, the movement would disappear. Thus both Saints Peter and Paul became victims of Nero's insanity.
