St. Peter was chosen by Our Lord to be an apostle and the first leader (pope) of his new Church. Peter preached the Gospel and was later arrested under orders of Emperor Nero and crucified on an upside down cross for being a Christian.

yes he was, because even though he denied knowing Jesus, (when under pressure),.... he regretted it deeply, and proved himself a loyal follower of Christ, for the rest of his life, even being imprisoned for his faith.

Peter was appointed by Christ as the first leader, or pope, of the new Christian Church. He, along with St. Paul, were largely responsible for spreading the new faith in the early days. Both died as martyrs.
