Because Stanley catches glimpses of it while he is working in the lake. He remembers that his great great grandfather took refuge there after he was robbed of his fortune by Kissin Kate Barlow around 100 years ago. His great great grandfather survived so when Stanley escapes Camp Green Lake, he relises he and Zero can take refuge there too.
When Zero collapses Stanley asks if Zero is okay and Zero says that he is fine. Afterwards Stanley encourages Zero to keep going by saying that he can have pizza and ice cream when he reaches the top.
Zero ends up trying to save Stanley using his shovel as soon as they get to God's Thumb. But, when Zero saves Stanley, the shovel gives him a huge gash on his hand.
Zero had to trust that Stanley would take care of him when they were climbing on God's thumb. That's one trustworthy moment.
well after zero and Stanley go to find refuge on gods thumb, they break the curse that madam zeroni had put on the yelnats family, so when they went to find the treasure of coarse zero read what the name was and shocked the warden, also saving Stanley from getting accused from what he didnt do again... so in the end zero is a hero because he broke the curse and got Stanley his treasure!
