Stephen Douglas (1813-1861) was a politician who became a US Senator from Illinois by defeating Abraham Lincoln, only to lose to Lincoln in the Presidential election of 1860. Douglas was a champion of States Rights and helped pass the Compromise of 1850 that balanced slave states against free states. He died of typhoid fever shortly after the Civil War began in 1861.
