With the exception of the slave states of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware, the other eleven slave states became part of the Confederacy. Slave owners in Texas saw president-elect Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party as a threat to slavery and to a lesser extent to "states-rights". Texans saw a dim future for their state as the Northern states were growing in number and in population over the period of time leading up to 1860. In order to not become marginalized, they saw their future with the new Confederacy. As with all of the secessionist states, there were a number of Unionists there who did oppose secession.
