Because his would-be assasinator had a dream about President McKinely and he said that Theodore Roosevelt was his murderer, and to avenge his death, so he did. Roosevelt was very lucky he did not die, see: http://www.doctorzebra.com/prez/z_x26a_t.htm

No, but someone from Milwaukee tried to get TR killed. Somewhere near Election Day 1912, TR wanted to make a speech when the shot rang out. It ripped through his speech and his chest, but his strong chest muscles and his coat kept the bullet out of his lung.

He said to his audience, "Friends, I'm going to ask you to be very quiet. I'll do the best I can, but there is a bullet in my body." He revealed his bloody shirt. The audience was scared, but TR said, "It would take more than a bullet to kill a Bull Moose! No one has had a happier life than I have..."

Someone tried to quiet him. TR, however, just kept on talking. He said, "I have had an A-1 time in life and I'm having it now!" He spoke for 1 1/2 hours before going to the hospital.

He didn't.

Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep at the age of 61 on January 6, 1919. He had suffered from recurrences of malaria and inflammatory rheumatism, and died of a heart attack.
