The Philippines was controlled by the US as a colony from 1898 to 1946. It began when the Philippines was ceded by Spain to the US following the Spanish-American War. The US then established military control over the islands and eventually implemented a civil government. Full independence was granted in 1946.

Among the reason to take the Philippines was to prevent Germany or Japan from taking it over. The US wanted a Naval Base and Coaling Station in the Pacific, but was not interested in owning the Philippines. The fear was that if they did not take over the Philippines from Spain, the Spanish might find a buyer that was hostile to American interests.
The Philippines as a whole does not and did not have feelings. Some Filipinos did not like the US taking over, some did, and some did not care.
