William Howard Taft was elected US President in November 1908.
William Taft became President because President Theodore Roosevelt picked him to become President by stating "If you like me then you would vote for him". And William Taft won the election.

Truman was the incumbent president when he ran for president. He had become president because he was vice-president when Roosevelt died early in his 4th term. I presume he wanted to prove that he could be elected on own and advance his own program.

Has a Republican run against a standing Republican president?

In a way this is what happened in 1912. Former President Theodore Roosevelt, who was elected as a Republican Vice President in 1900 and as a Republican President in 1904, tried to get the nomination in 1912, but when he failed to get it, he ran as a third party candidate against the incumbent Republican president William Howard Taft. Both were defeated by Democrat Woodrow Wilson.
