How old are Stone Keep Castles?

Stone Keep castles (Stone castles) are quite a few centuries old. They were built in the 11th century by King William I (William the conqueror) not long after he took over Britain after the battle of hastings. Stone castles however, weren't the first castles William built in Britain. He first built Motte and Bailey castles. The reasons for this were that they were cheap and easy to build as they were made out of wood. He decided to build Stone castles to replace many of the Motte and Bailey castles for many reasons including these: * Stone castles don't burn * Stone castles don't rot within a few years but will carry on standing for centuries to come * Stone castles were heavier, making them much stronger

Why did King William I want to build his castles out of stone?

King William the I (William the conqueror) didn't build all his castles out of stone. In fact, most of the castles he built were made out of wood. These wooden castles were called Motte and Bailey castles. The castles that hedid build out of stone were called Stone Keep Castles (Stone Castles). King William built the Stone Keep Castles out of stone because stone is stronger than wood, doesn't rot within a few years and doesn't burn easily.

What is the name of the 1st stone castle made in Britain?

Stone castles already existed in Normandy and France at the time of the Norman conquest of England, but in view of the need to rapidly subdue the land and its population most of the castles built under William I were of earth and timber. A few stone castles, or stone donjons (towers) within earth ramparts, were constructed immediately, however - one of the earliest was William's palace at London which later became "The Tower of London".The White Tower (Tower of London) was begun in 1077, but the Normans had already begun construction of a stone donjon at Chepstow in Gwent, Wales, in 1072 - this may have been the earliest in Britain.

Are there different castles?

Yes, there are many different types of castles. There are motte and bailey castles, concentric castles and stone keep castles. They were built all over England by King William in the 11th and 12th century.

In what time period were Stone Keep Castles built?

Stone or square keep castles were first built in Medieval England by William the Conqueror. Stone keep castles were the natural extension of motte and bailey castles. Motte and bailey castles were only temporary features (though many mottes exist to this day) while stone keep castles were built to last.
