The punitive demands of the Allies on Germany at the Treaty of Versailles after World War I pushed Germany to her limits, nearly derailing the whole economy with enormous inflation, overseas debt and unemployment.

Defeat in World War I was also the end of Germany as a monarchy. However Germany's quick change in 1919 from the monarchy of the Kaiser to a new and unfamiliar Weimar Republic also left something of a gap in the nation's leadership and identity. The political and ideological rivalries and tensions during the brief Weimar years allowed Hitler's National Socialists to gradually pave their way to overwhelming power.
