Spark plug wires get stiff and brittle with age. Hopefully these weren't the wires that came with the vehicle, but chances are the plastic shielding on the wire got old, weathered and brittle and got a crack in it. Once it cracks, the spark energy will leave the wire and arc to your engine block rather than at the spark plug to fire the cylinder.

No, it will not cause any damage to the car.
