As far as history has told me York Harbour got its name from James Cook as he was mapping the west coast of Newfoundland. It was names after one of his ships as was Lark Harbour the next community. I found an article published by Stewart Harvey Who was the principal of St James School in Lark Harbour which i attended. i don't remembe exactly where i found the article but it was found by doing a search on the Bay of Islands if i recall correctly....Hope this helps to answer your question....

Thanks

A proud Newfie from the bay.

New Brunswick is named for the German city of Braunschweig, anglicized to "Brunswick".

The name was chosen because at that time (1784) King George III was not only the British monarch but was also the prince-elector (effectively a high-ranking prince) of the province where Braunschweig is located. The somewhat contorted history behind the connection goes back to George III's great-grandfather. When Queen Anne of Great Britain died in 1714, her closest living Protestant relative was Georg, Elector of Hanover, Germany. Georg assumed the throne of England as King George while retaining his title in Germany. His dual title established the House of Hanover as the British royal house as well, a link that continued until Queen Victoria's ascension in 1837.

Many believe that there are two ways St. John's received it's name.

One common belief is that when Italian man Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) was exploring for a new trade route to Asia, he stumbled across what we now know as Newfoundland. Thus, naming the city St. John's.

The second belief is that the name was given by Basque fishermen because the bay located in the city of St. John's looks similar to the bay of Pasaia back in the Basque Country, where one of their fishing towns is also called St. John. (In spanish, it would be called San Juan).

The reason it called Newfoundland is because they found it and it had not yet been discovered. So they decided to call it Newfoundland.
