Probably a number of reason, he may truly have believed that there was only one god and not the multitude of gods that were worshipped in the older religion but he probably also felt that the priests of the old gods had far too much power and by abolishing the old religions and replacing them with a new one with himself at the head he probably hoped to increase his own power while at the same time drastically reducing the influence of the priests.

Akhenaton's new religion proposed that only one god should be worshipped. The egyptians had a hard time swallowing this, thinking it might enrage the other gods. Also, it is very hard to get thousands of people to suddenly change their ways that drastically. However, the by king Tutankhamen came to power next. Gaining the throne at a mere nine years of age. He was under much influence from adults (who didnt like Akhenaton's choice), and was convinced to change back to the origianl religion.

Scholars disagree about exactly who was Tutankhamen's father. Akhenaton, formerly Amenhotep IV, may have been Tut's father. Akhenaton is famous for abolishing traditional Egyptian religion and starting his own monotheistic religion that worshiped the sun. Some scholars believe that Akhenaton's monotheism may have influenced ancient Hebrew religion as one of Akhenaton's hymns to the Aten (sun) is very similar to Psalm 104.
Akhenaten, or Amenhotep IV, tried to change the Egyptian religion. He wanted everyone to worship the sun god, (not Ra, the element) Aten.
