Akhenaton's new religion proposed that only one god should be worshipped. The egyptians had a hard time swallowing this, thinking it might enrage the other gods. Also, it is very hard to get thousands of people to suddenly change their ways that drastically.
However, the by king Tutankhamen came to power next. Gaining the throne at a mere nine years of age. He was under much influence from adults (who didnt like Akhenaton's choice), and was convinced to change back to the origianl religion.
