Best Answer

Athletics was taken up in Rome as a result of Greek influence. The Romans adopted Greek sports, including athletics, and the Greek gymnasium. In Greece athletics was part of the (ancient) Olympic Games.

Athletic contests in running, walking, jumping, and throwing are among the oldest of all sports and their roots are prehistoric. There is evidence of athletic games in Egypt dating to 2250 BC and in Ireland to 1800 BC.

The BC years are counted the other way round. Therefore, it should be 201-200 BC, not 200-201 BC. There were no civil wars in Rome in 201-200 BC. The 13 civil wars of the Late Roman Republic started later, in 98 BC, and run on and off until 30 BC. In addition, the 200-year Conflict of the Orders between the patricians (the aristocrats) and the plebeians (the commoners) was over by 287 BC. This conflict did not involve civil wars. There was no conflict between Rome's social orders in 201-200 BC. The year 200 BC saw the beginning of the Second Macedonian War with the Kingdom of Macedon in Greece.
