To publicize their views
In 1800 there were newspapers and periodicals that regularly published political articles. Pamphlets and flyers were printed and handed out on the streets and to some extent mailed out. Notices and signs were posted in public places and people took the time to read them. Candidates would make speeches and people would talk to each other. (Of course there was no TV or radio or Internet . Candidate did not do much campaigning themselves because it was unseemly to extol ones own virtues. )
Candidates running for public office will plan a campaign in efforts to convince citizens to vote for the candidate. On the campaign trail, candidates will hold town hall meetings, press conferences and speak to leading civic organizations to win votes.
The election of 1960 marked a significant shift in the way candidates run their campaigns. It was the first election where televised debates played a major role, allowing candidates to directly engage with voters. This led to a greater emphasis on image and charisma, as candidates had to present themselves effectively on screen. Additionally, the election highlighted the importance of public perception and messaging, leading to more strategic and carefully crafted campaigns in subsequent elections.
Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams, the incumbent President were the candidates in 1828. It was the first election for Jackson's Democratic Party which was formed after Jackson lost out in 1824, despite leading in both the popular vote and electoral vote. It was the first election in which two national parties ran national campaigns.
The simplest reason is that when there is a clear candidate that is generally believed to be the party's inevitable candidate, that party will rally around that person. The Republican Party in this election is the exact opposite of this, with no candidate really appearing to be inevitable. There is also a large fight between the Republican establishment and the non-establishment candidates, leading to many candidates not withdrawing even though their poll numbers are low.
