Britain entered the war as a result of the German invasion of Belgium, as Britain had a defense treaty with Belgium (Britain wanted to enter the war and found a 100 year old treaty to use as pretext). Italy, who was allied with Germany before the war, did not enter on the German side as they had a defense pact, and joined with the Entente powers with promises of German and Austrian colonies and territory.
The U.S. was allied to the Nationalist part of china.
A strong contender comes very early in the war with the first battle of The Marne in early September 1914. The German defeat at the Marne extinguished any hopes of succesfully executing the modified Schlieffen Plan and thus knocking France out of the war quickly before turning East to face the Russians. There after ensued a series of failed flanking manoeuvres by both sides known as "The race to the sea" which resulted in both sides being entrenched from the Swiss border to the English channel in a deadly stalemate which was to last until the final weeks of the war some 4 years later. Having failed to achieve a quick victory in the West the odds from this point forward were always stacked against the Triple Alliance due to the greater resources and manpower of the Triple Entente and the eventual entry into the war of the USA on the entente side
Italy bailed out of the Triple Alliance before the war got really going. They did participate in the fighting on the Allied side.
Depends on the timezones, but for continental USA its China-Iran.

The two sides lasted for the entire war. Neither side backed out and the only movement was Italy that switched from the Triple Alliance to the Triple Entente mid way through the war. Overall 4 years.
In a way yes, and in a way no. The United States joined the war on the side of the Triple Entente but never officially joined the Triple Entente. The United States joined the war as an associated power. This meant the US was joining the war but wasn't joining all the alliances that had been made and had been used to drag the entire European continent into a war. The answer is no the US did not join the Triple Entente.
