The nation of Vietnam had been colonized by the French, and the social conditions in Vietnam were a perfect example of the exploitation of the working class by greedy and selfish capitalists, just as Karl Marx described, so communism made perfect sense to the people of Vietnam. In addition, with communist China to the north, and communist Russia to the farther north, communism was at that time a dominant force in Asia in general, and seemed like a pefectly reasonable ideology to adopt. It seemed to be what everybody in the neighborhood was doing.
