The corporations were becoming a law unto themselves, much as some would say they are becoming today. They were creating monopolies and fixing prices and gouging the consumers while giving sweetheart deals to other corporations and instituting a series of private kickbacks that went into the pockets of the corporate leaders instead of the profits of the companies, which would have lowered the costs for the common customers. The owners of these companies exhibited exorbitant wealth causing the journalists of the day to refer to them as Robber Barons. [They were the one percent of their time.] The goal was to end these predatory practices.
