People left East Berlin for the freedom of West Germany. While people of all ages fled, many were young and had hopes for brighter futures. It was nearly impossible to do this living in East Germany.
For the freedom.
In east Berlin your life was observed and controlled by the government and the was no freedom of speech/press and the was no process if someone was accused of a crime. Also in West Berlin the economy was good with high paid jobs, were as East Berlin was much, much poorer.
After WW2, Germany had been divided into 4 parts, the three western parts were controlled by France and US and Britain (Called western Germany) the east was controlled by Soviets. The Soviets made the east communist and and it became a very bad place for people to live. Berlin (on the eastern side) was split into east and west (Only east being communist). A wall was built to keep people fromt he east going into the west. People wanted to go to the east because it wasnt communist and living plus working conditions were better
After the war, germany was left in ruins and east-berlin was being rebuilt by the americans fuelled by the Marshall Plan.
