It was to motivate his men to fight superior numbers and win. He said, in response to the objection of one of his commanders who asked, "How are going to return home?" "We're going home in their ships."
Fernando Magallanes was the first person to travel around the world. He left Seville, Spain with five ships and 234 men, but only one ship with 18 men, led by Juan Elcano came back to Seville. Magallanes died during the trip in a battle against native people of an island in the Philippines.
His men were busy looting, and they did not listen to his prudent order to return to the ships and leave.

Hernan Cortes ordered his men to burn all but one of their ships. Cortes reasoned that by eliminating their only method of retreat, his men had no choice but to fight hard to win against the Aztecs, which they ultimately did (Global Business Today (2010)).
