She won two competitive Academy Awards or Oscars in the US for Best Actress in 1960 for Butterfield 8 and again in 1966 for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.

In 1993, she was awarded the Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, giving her three Oscars.

Additionally she was nominated as best actress for: Raintree County (1957), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and Suddenly Last Summer (1959).
