During those two particular years Hitler managed to succeed in getting a large amount of support from the public (as it was after the depression of 1929). As a result, Hitler basically went from having a relatively small party to having the biggest single party in the Reichstag, consequently forcing Hindenberg (current President of Weimar Germany) to pick him as Chancellor.

Why? having the biggest single party in the Reichstag meant that he had the most support. This was something that the previous Chancellor´s, Von Papen and Von Schleicher did not have.

As the government of Germany was Democratic (in fact the most democratic system in the whole world at that time), nobody could get too much power. Thus, decisions were made by the Reichstag and the Chancellor. As the German economy suffered in the 1930s, it became only too clear that the democratic system was not working, made worse by no support in the Reichstag. Which is why the president had no choice but to pick someone who actually had support.

To what extent was Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in 1933 the result of the failure of parliamentary democracy in Germany?

Before World War II, Germany was a nation with a history of paying little interest inÊdemocracy. By the time Hitler took over as Chancellor, the people were without jobs, without food, afraid, and desperate for relief. The economic impact of the Great Depression plus the indecisive and self-serving nature of its elected officials has brought Germany to a complete standstill. In a way, Hitler did bring Germany back up to it's former glory but with all intent and purpose of grooming it into his dream of a New World with it on top and the rest of the world under his feet.

When was Hitler elected?

He was never elected either Chancellor or President of Germany, but he did win a majority of seats in several elections, including the most important one in 1933. He was appointed Chancellor in January 1933 from Paul von Hindenburg, the president, who was under great pressure, and who actually despised him. As the undisputed leader of his party he was then able to first pass the enabling act which made him effectively dictator, then ban all other parties, then after Hindenburg's death merge the offices of President and Chancellor into one office, "Führer und Reichskanzler".

What were the Jews' immediate reactions to Hitler becoming Chancellor of Germany?

The appointment of Hitler was largely the result of intrigue. It was unexpected and left most Germans thunderstruck. Even members of the Nazi Party could hardly believe the news. Those German Jews who were politically active as socialists, Communists or liberals had no illusions about what Nazi rule would mean, but they were a minority. Many of the other Jews took a long time to understand what was happening to them. After all, they were Germans, the vast majority were law-abiding and patriotic and believed that Germany was a civilized country and that their friends were loyal and trustworthy.
