People need a liver transplant because their own liver doesn't work well enough anymore to keep them alive.

The liver stops functioning for many reasons, as the liver has over 140 functions in the body.

Reasons for liver failure include, but are not limited to:

1. Genetic diseases

2. Alcohol abuse/Alcoholism

3. Hepatitis (A,B, or C)

4. Massive infections that travel into the blood (sepsis), blood transfusions received before they began testing blood for Hepatitis, HIV, or other diseases.

5. Blunt trauma to the liver

Where can you get a liver?

You can find a liver in most forms of animal. However if you need a liver that's suitable for a human to use, you need a human liver. (The only way to get a liver transplant is to register at your nearest hospital with a liver transplant unit. These are usually only part of bigger training hospital's, as opposed to local hospitals). If you just want an animal liver to experiment with, try your local butcher.

How much liver is required for liver transplant?

Enough to keep the recipient alive and hopefully healthy, so it's around 90-110% of the size of the recipient's original liver that is required. (You can survive with only 5% of your liver working, but obviously the liver transplant recipient wants to live, not merely survive (since you can "survive" whist being quite ill). If a liver becomes available, it would be silly not to transplant as much of it as possible to meet the size of the original, since this speeds up recovery time post-transplant - i.e the liver does not need lots of time to regenerate, since it's already the correct size).

My friend was told that she only has one percent of her liver left can she live on this?

One percent of normal liver function is not sufficient to maintain life. Your friend will need a liver transplant, providing she is a candidate, if she is to survive much longer.

Why is it important to take care of your liver?

The liver is responsible for some vital tasks like detoxification and producing certain chemicals needed for digestion. Hugh Laurie in House once said "You can't live without a liver. Hence the name." This is true. You need your liver to survive, and unlike the kidneys, the functions of the liver can not be maintained via machines. Liver transplants can be done, but transplant lists have hundreds and hundreds of people in need of a liver, many in critical condition. The point is you can't depend on a liver transplant to fix your liver problems. It's easier to take care of it than have to face the ramifications of not taking care of it. You don't necessarily have to take special steps to take care of your liver, though it wouldn't do much harm if you did. All you need to do is avoid gratuitous drinking, too much fats, etc. Basically all you need to do is have a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
