The Bible does not tell us specifically, but in a number of places it mentions that the creation reflects God's glory and points to His infinite wisdom and power. This includes all the relevant laws of planetary motion. Some also believe that the universe, including the planets has been created in such a way as to defy evolutionary/materialistic explanations as to their origins. Some have even described the beauty of the planets of our solar system as a sign of God's artistry and cite Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God..."

The galaxies and stars consist of the material created by the Big Bang. This material went out in all directions and some of it formed the stars that we see in the night sky. Scientists say that even the stars are only a small part of all the matter in the universe, because most matter is dark.

One otherwise very insignificant star produced after the Big Bang is our sun. It looks so big and bright because it is so much closer to us.

When the gaseous accretion disc formed around the sun, it did not consolidate into just one core, but several. These became the sun's planets and from a planetary point of view, the earth is not special, even though it is special to us.

Dozens of other planets have now been identified around nearby stars, so there must be billions of planets in the universe, no doubt many of them supporting advanced life forms.

For those with the "eyes to see" [with a spiritually opened hearts and minds willing to believe] the Bible tells us that the earth is the place where God has restrained "the angels that sinned" in the beginning, before man was made. The earth is where God has "confined sin" for the time being, until the Day of Judgment... when all sin and evil will be Judged, Sentenced and Removed from existence.

"And angels, who did not preserve their original rank but left their proper home, He has kept in everlasting chains of darkness, for the Day of Judgment..." (Jude 1:6 WNTWilliam's New Testament).

"For God did not spare angels when they sinned, but hurled them down to Tartarus [a condition of restraint] and committed them to dark dungeons to await their doom [Judgment]..." (II Peter 2:4 WNT).

[same verse, Weymouth's New Testament - WEY]: "For God did not spare angels when they had sinned, but hurling them down to Tartarus consigned them to caves of darkness, keeping them in readiness for Judgment."

It's EARTH where God has confined sin for the present allotment of time, preventing it from leaving its confines and polluting the universe further from the previous damage done to it, when once, war raged in heaven:

"And war broke out in Heaven, Michael and his angels engaging in battle with the Dragon. The Dragon fought and so did his angels; but they were defeated, and there was no longer any room found for them in Heaven. The great Dragon, the ancient serpent, he who is called 'the Devil' and 'the Adversary' [Satan] and leads the whole earth astray, was hurled down: he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him." (Rev.12:7-9 WEY)

God is in the process of creating A FAMILY FOR HIMSELF. The Divine Family of the Immortal Children of the Family of God.

Man was made in "God's Image"... after the manner that a human father creates children after his image. God created cows after the "cow-kind," birds after the "bird-kind," fish after the "fish-kind," etc. -- and MAN after the "GOD-kind!"

God created man ON THE EARTH... where the angels that sinned were confined and awaiting the Day of Judgment for their previous rebellion.

And it's on the earth, that God prepared in six days to sustain mankind [God's future Children]... that the angels who sinned have been "teaching man all about the bottomless depths of sin"... the misery, suffering, hatred, envy, lust, greed... and death... so that man, in the flesh [moldable clay], will learn about the WRONG WAY TO LIVE. And to also learn through Jesus Christ about LOVE and RIGHTEOUSNESS, selflessness, respect and caring for and about others... the RIGHT WAY TO LIVE; so that on the Day of Judgment, man will be able to make an "informed decision" which way he will embrace: the way of Righteousness, and Live Forever; or the way of iniquity [evil, lawlessness], and perish forever.

The earth is the temporary "confinement center of sin" where God is working out the eradication of sin and evil from the universe. And at the same time... it's the "testing-ground" for His future Family to learn to distinguish between the good and the bad.

"...he will know enough to choose WHAT IS RIGHT and REJECT WHAT IS WRONG." (Isa.7:15 NLT New Living Translation)

And when God's plan is done... he will cleanse the earth of sin and evil with FIRE [on Judgment Day]... and make it anew. The New Earth will become a Jewel in the "Center of the Universe," where the very Throne of the Father in heaven will descend upon it [see Rev.21:1-5].

"...Look, the Home of God is now among His people! He will live with them, and they will be His people. God [the Father] Himself will be with them." [verse 3].

And God's newly-born Immortal Family will begin to colonize and recreate the ravaged universe that man now sees beyond the confines of earth. The ravaged planets that were destroyed in that ancient war in heaven in the beginning.

The earth is the temporary "holding tank" for sin, until God brings it all into Judgment, and establishes His new Family in the universe:

"After that the end will come, when He [Christ] will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having put down all enemies of every kind. For Christ must reign until He humbles all His enemies beneath His feet. And the LAST ENEMY to be destroyed is DEATH." (I Cor.15:24-26 NLT)

This will be on Judgment Day... the day upon which the angels that sinned await in their confinement upon the earth.

"And death and the grave were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the Second Death - the Lake of Fire." (Rev.20:14 NLT)

These are some of the reasons why God created the earth.

Jewish Answer:

Why do humans respond emotionally to beautiful sights? And why are painters, sculptors, or musicians motivated emotionally (even beyond monetary need) - to create works of beauty? We are created in the image of God (Genesis ch.5), and God himself is a master artist, who (we intuit) enjoys beauty and has made this beautiful world (see Genesis 1:31). The best human efforts to create beauty are a pale reflection of God's own designs. We respond to them because we are made in the Creator's image.

God made the Earth for people: "He did not create [the earth] simply for nothing," but "formed it to be inhabited" (Isaiah 45:18). He wanted them to exist in order to have someone to love. When the righteous use their free-will to obey God despite His being hidden, they have shown that they deserve His love. Their reward will never cease. But even the undeserving are given the kindness of life in this world, and the lifelong ability to repent.

The planets, including our own Earth, were formed over four and a half billion years ago from an accretion disc that is believed to have been material from a nearby supernova and captured by our sun's gravity. Some believe God guided the creation of the planets because the gradual consolidation of that accretion disc into planets was a natural process dictated by the laws of nature.

God made the Earth for people: "He did not create [the earth] simply for nothing," but "formed it to be inhabited" (Isaiah 45:18). He wanted people to exist in order to have someone to love, and to give us an opportunity to achieve godliness. All people are tested concerning their use of free-will. We possess a soul which lives on after the body dies and is held responsible for the person's actions. Anyone who is worthy can merit reward in the afterlife. When the righteous use their free-will to obey God despite His being hidden, they have shown that they deserve His love. Their reward will never cease. But even the undeserving are given the kindness of life in this world, and the lifelong ability to draw near to Him.See also:
