Geronimo was a Chiricahua Apache (his name in the Chiricahua-Mescalero language was Goyathlay)
No. Geronimo was actually born under the name Goyathlay, meaning "he who yawns." Because the Spanish prayed to St. Jerome, Goyathlay became known as Geronimo (cf. the Spanish name for Jerome, Jerónimo). Seeing as Geronimo is really a nickname, it is clear that he has no last name; as such, he is just called "Geronimo."
Goyathlay - meaning one who yawns
Geronimo
Many years but nobody knows exactly how long The first official mention of Goyathlay's involvement in any form of military action was in retaliation for a Mexican army attack on his village (March 6th, 1851). During this retaliation attack Goyathlay abandoned the use of a gun and used a knife instead, the men he killed cried out to Saint Jerome "Jeronimo" and thus he was named Geronimo. He officially surrendered on September 4th 1886 at Skeleton Canyon Arizona. Using these dates the time of his official battles / war, was 35 years.
Actually, one of the things he said that became most famous was, "Geronimo." The name given to him at birth was Goyathlay. He became known as Geronimo after his escape from US Army troops as he jumped from Medicine Bluff into Cache Creek on the US Army reservation at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. The meaning of the word is unclear and may have been simply an Apache battle or war cry of some type. It is also possible that the troops who witnessed the jump from what is now known as Geronimo's Leap at the peak of the bluff misheard Goyathlay. For those interested Goyathlay's grave is on the Ft. Sill Military Reservation north of Lawton, Oklahoma. The jail where he was incarcerated there is still standing and part of the tour. His cell is open to be viewed with the 3" trough worn in the floor where he paced nonstop for the years he was held there. The hospital where he died is now the barracks for USAFAC HQ personnel.
he was born in what was Mexican territory , but what is now New Mexico in 1829 . his name means the one who yawns .Geronimo was born in the year 1829. This is close to Mexico.
Geronimo is the Spanish term for Jerome.
In 1829 Native Americans in the west did not have both a given and surname. He was given the name of Goyaale (which means "one who yawns" in the Apache language) at birth and the name Geronimo (Gerome is the English version of the name) was given him by the Mexican Army.
