Herbert Hoover believed in the concept of individualism and self-reliance. He argued that excessive government assistance to the poor would undermine personal responsibility and the work ethic of individuals, discouraging them from seeking employment and relying on their own efforts. Hoover believed that self-reliance was essential for maintaining personal pride and fostering a productive society.
President Hoover saw two main problems with government-paid public works jobs. Firstly, he believed that such jobs would create dependency on the government and discourage individual initiative and self-reliance. Secondly, Hoover was concerned that government intervention in the economy through public works projects would lead to inefficiency and wasteful spending.
Hoover himself came to symbolize the failures of the federal government. President Hoover Hoover expanded civil service coverage of Federal positions, and canceled private oil leases on government lands.
People felt hurt and defended and would not agree with him because he was not doing right for American
they would become lazy and dependent on that income
it would undermine individual character.
When the great depression struck, Hoover decided not to give government aid to the people believing that it would inflate the Federal government budget.

The most significant event was the Great Depression. Banks failed and unemployment skyrocketed. Hoover was a firm believer in "laissez-faire". It was the idea that government should have no involvement with the economy, and that it would eventually right itself. Because of the devastating effects of the Depression, most of the public disagreed with him. Everyone blamed Hoover for their misfortune. The next election, Roosevelt won handily, promising a "New Deal" for Americans. The Depression led to multiple government programs to help jump start the economy. The country went in debt to create the programs, such as Social Security, and the government has never stopped adding programs for the American people. It's important to note that The Depression ended because of World War II, not because of Roosevelt's "New Deal".
