This may not be knowable; when Job complained about his treatment God responded that, as a human, Job's perspective was limited, and what God knows is right may not make sense to a mortal.

There are, however, speculations. Satan (or "an adversary," depending on how one reads it) was given permission to test Job with suffering, so his misfortunes can be seen as God trying to prove whether or not Job would remain holy under adverse circumstances.

There is also a Jewish legend that Job was an adviser of Pharaoh. Pharaoh expressed his desire to kill the newborn Jewish boys; Job was opposed to the idea, but did not speak up in protest. As a result, God punished him.
