Major events of the fourth century, that made this growth possible were the state patronage provided to Christianity by Emperor Constantine at the beginning of the century, and the late-century recognition of Christianity as the Roman state religion.
A very important part of this development was the imperial policy of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I (379-395), and his successors, intended to eradicate paganism from the empire. With the support of the bishops and zealous imperial officials, the pagan temples in Palestine were destroyed.
