He was the King of France, he was executed by the people of France because of the crimes they believed that he had committed against them and the nation, and also because as long as he lived, the armies loyal to the royal family would have a cause to fight for.

His wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, was also executed. Their son died in imprisonment, meaning that of Louis XVI's 4 children, only one, the eldest, Marie Therese, survived the French Revolution (2 of the children had died before the revolution.)

Louis the 14th (XIV) did not get his head chopped off, he died of gangreen aged 77. His great-grandson, Louis the 16th (XVI) was executed by beheading on January 21st 1793.
