Basically the absentee English landlords and the British government starved them out. Add that to the long lasting potato famine and there was adequate reason to look for a place where there would be a better life. ( the great patato famine).

They left Ireland in the 1870s because of wanting to get a better life in other countries, and many chose to go to the United States. During the famine of 1845 - 1852, many people had gone to the US and so many continued to go after that because they believed that they would live a lot better there, as those that had gone previously had done.
