After the formal conclusion of the American Revolutionary War, British forces continued to occupy forts and other positions in the American Midwest (known then as the Northwest Territory) in a kind of defiance of American sovereignty. Along with other aggression, such as continuing to foster hostilities among Natives, England was in this way both tempting America to engage in a rash follow-up to the War for Independence and also bullying what they still saw as a backward and contemptible people.

During the American Revolution, France supplied the new American government with money (gold and French Francs), soldiers, and the French Navy. After the Americans defeated the British at the Battle of Saratoga, the French realized the American colonists could defeat the British regulars, and that helping the Americans would potentially weaken their hated British rivals.
